Get out of those study jams!

I have another great resource to share with you all today that is fun, can be used at home and is engaging and interactive for kids! The Scholastic website has great educational games for kids covering a variety of subjects and topic areas. One of the games I like is called "Force and Motion: 6 Studyjams! Interactive Science Activities". I like activities such as these as it allows students to learn and engage with technology, while not even realizing that they are expanding their knowledge. As a student, I would dread sitting in my seat and completing mindless worksheets where none of the learning and knowledge truly stuck with me. By completing interactive games, children can have fun, enhance their technological skills, and build their knowledge through personal experience and engagement!

This game relates specifically to the Ontario Science Curriculum (2007) under the grade 5 expectations of the Forces and Mechanisms strand. An overall expectation for this strand states that by the end of grade 5, students should investigate forces that act on structures and mechanisms. This game allows for that investigation and could also serve as a perfect activator or foundation for a future activity where the students actually complete a hands-on experiment with forces and motion. A great activity that can be adapted and used and incorporated within multiple platforms. Enjoy!

Let's go to the zoo! (online resource)

Here is an interactive resource for students that incorporate education AND fun- who would have thought!? The National Geographic website provides some great educational games and quizzes about animals and wildlife!

These games are important and relevant as they allow students to interactive engage with knowledge and material and make tangible connections with such knowledge. In the grade 4 Ontario Science Curriculum(2007), an overall expectation within the topic of habitats states that by the end of grade 4, students will have the ability to: analyse the effects of human activities on habitats and communities. The National Geographic website has some great games to exemplify this interaction so that students have a relatable experience with these connections among humans and animals!

Work hard, play hard!

Technology and websites do not only have to be used for educational purposes in the classroom. They can also be used to explore interests and relax (with an equal balance to education and school work as well!). 3 of my favorite websites I like to visit are: StumbleUpon , Pinterest and Lauren Conrad . StumbleUpon is a great website when you are bored or just want to find something new to do, bringing you to a random website (according to interest you select) at the click of your mouse! Pinterest is great for looking for different topics you are interested in, such as cooking, reading, quotes, fitness and much more! Lauren Conrad's website is a little guilty pleasure of mine for health, beauty, fashion, crafts and food!

Educational Entertainment

Hey everyone! I just wanted to share a useful resource for any students who may be spending too much time in front of the TV! We have all heard it from our parents before, so here it is: Unplug the Tv! This is a great website where anyone can find interesting educational topics in video-form. Instead of TV, enjoy some educational videos that are not your classic boring documentaries, but fun and interesting topics geared towards kids!

Welcome!

Welcome to my tech-savvy blog! This blog will address various educational practices regarding technology as well as the incorporation of technology into the classroom. I hope you will find this blog useful and provides you with some ideas of how you can educationally use technology to enhance learning in or out of the classroom!
